Why Tree's have bark

There is a lot of discussion on how to care for a tree along with the benefits of regular pruning, trimming, and fertilization. Here at Tree Doctors, part of our tree care services is to do a thorough examination of the trees themselves. In this blog we will discuss the bark and why it is important.

The outer bark

While each species of tree have different styles of bark, they all serve the same purpose. As you may have guessed the outer parts of the bark act as a layer of protection from environmental damages such as strong wind or rain. This layer also acts as a deterrent to insects and animals, however, some species of insects have discovered ways to burrow through this outer layer and to the appetizing bark layer beneath. As the tree grows, the outer bark is renewed.

Beneath the bark

Directly beneath the outer bark is one of the most important layers to the tree - The phloem. This layer is what takes all the sugars gathered during photosynthesis and transports them to the rest of the tree. The next level of the tree is called the Cambium, which is one of the key layers for tree growth as it creates new layers of phloem and inner layers of xylem. Xylem is the fourth layer of the tree, it works opposite the phloem layer and instead brings water and nutrients from the soil and up into the rest of the tree. The very center of the tree resides the heartwood. The center of the tree that consists of dead cells and acts as the main support of the entire tree.
