Signs It's Time to Remove That Stump

Stump Removal

That stump has been sitting there for a while. Here's why it's worth dealing with sooner rather than later.

It's a tripping hazard. Stumps – especially older ones that have started to sink into the ground – are easy to miss and easy to trip on. If you have children, guests, or tenants using the yard, it's a liability you don't need.

It's attracting pests. Decaying stumps are prime habitat for carpenter ants, termites, and other wood-boring insects. Once established, those pests don't always stay in the stump – they can migrate to your home or other healthy trees nearby.

It's producing new growth. Many tree species send up new shoots from the stump and root system after removal. These sprouts are persistent, and they'll keep coming back until the stump and roots are dealt with.

It's taking up usable space. Whether you want to plant something new, extend your lawn, add a patio, or simply have a clean yard, a stump is always in the way. Removal opens up the space for whatever you actually want there.

It looks neglected. A stump in an otherwise well-maintained yard stands out. Removing it is a simple improvement that makes an immediate difference to your property's appearance and curb appeal.

Highly recommend

We had a very large emerald cedar removed from our front yard by The Tree Doctors and had a great experience from start to finish. The tree was starting to cause damage, and their team made the whole process easy and stress-free. They arrived right within the scheduled window, were incredibly fast and efficient, and worked safely and professionally the entire time. Olek, Tavas, and Yandir were all…

Definitely recommend!

My Japanese Maple split at the top over the winter. Eric was able to wrap it, prune it, and advise me on how to make sure it doesn’t get worse.

I strongly recommend Tree Doctors

I went to several companies to get a quote, and not only were they the best price, but the person that came to take the estimate, Glenn, was wonderful and made it clear that he wanted to do the work for us. The experience with the team with JJ and two other great guys was amazing, as they were really friendly, very fast at getting the job done, but took a lot of care in making sure it went well.…

Price. Performance. Professionalism

We had a very large dead, elm tree in our backyard that needed to be removed, contacted tree doctors and there after met John Karajovanov. We had one other quote before meeting him, and after meeting him and seeing how thorough he was, we decided to hire Tree Doctors. Price: we didn’t choose this firm because of the price, but as it turns out, it was 20% cheaper than the other quote. Performance:…

Frequently Asked Questions

What is stump grinding?

Stump grinding uses a rotating cutting wheel to chip the stump and surface roots down to several inches below ground level. The remaining wood chips can be used as mulch or removed from the site. It's the fastest and least invasive method of stump removal for most properties.

How deep do you grind the stump?

We typically grind to 6–12 inches below grade, which is sufficient for most replanting and landscaping purposes. If you need deeper grinding – for example, to pour a concrete pad – we can accommodate that on request.

What happens to the wood chips after grinding?

We can spread them over the ground as mulch, collect and remove them, or leave them in a pile for you to use elsewhere in your garden. Just let us know your preference when we quote the job.

Will the tree grow back after stump grinding?

Grinding removes the stump and disrupts the main root system, which stops regrowth in most cases. Some species are more persistent than others – if you're concerned about resprouting, we can advise on the best approach for your specific tree.

Can you grind stumps close to fences, walls, or garden beds?

Yes. Our equipment comes in different sizes, and we select the right machine for the access and space available. We take care to protect surrounding structures and landscaping throughout the job.

How long does stump grinding take?

Most residential stumps are ground in under an hour. Larger stumps or multiple stumps on the same property take longer – we'll give you a realistic time estimate when we quote the job.
